| Brief History |
-
Bangued’s early settlers were the Tinguians belonging to the Bago, Itneg, Masadjit, lbanao and Indayas tribes, who latter intermarried with the migrant Ilocanos.
-
Augustinian Fr. Miñon and Esteban Marin founded a mission here in 1598 and a Spanish garrison was established for protection from Tingguian headhunting incursions.
-
In 1612, the mission became a ministry under Fr. Pedro Columbo.
-
In 1619, Bangued was made into an encomienda of Ilocos known as El Abra de Bigan.
-
In 1704, it became an independent pueblo.
-
Bangued was made as the seat of the provincial government of Abra on July 25, 1861, the Feast of St. James the Great.
-
The town’s name was derived from the native word bangen meaning "obstacles" or "roadblock."
